Flexion/Distraction Therapy
Flexion/distraction therapy is a specialized, evidence-based chiropractic technique performed on a segmented table that gently flexes and distracts — or stretches — the spine in a slow, rhythmic motion. It was developed by Dr. James Cox and is widely used for conditions involving the intervertebral discs, spinal stenosis, and nerve compression.
The goal of flexion/distraction is to increase the space within the spinal canal and between the vertebrae, which reduces pressure on compressed discs and irritated nerve roots. As the table moves, it creates a gentle pumping action that helps draw disc material back toward the center of the disc, encourages circulation of nutrients into the disc tissue, and reduces inflammation in the surrounding structures.
At Empower Chiropractic & Wellness, flexion/distraction is a particularly valuable tool for patients who need spinal decompression but aren't good candidates for high-velocity adjustments — whether due to the nature of their condition, their comfort level, or other health considerations. The technique is painless, relaxing, and highly effective for a range of spinal conditions.
Flexion/distraction is commonly used for herniated or bulging discs, sciatica and leg pain, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, facet joint syndrome, post-surgical back pain, and failed back surgery syndrome. It's also an excellent option during pregnancy when traditional manipulation of the lumbar spine needs to be modified.
